for students

The SF Nutrition Clinic accepts 1-2 volunteer students per year who are enrolled in a Dietetic Undergraduate Program, and have completed a minimum of 2 years (3 preferred).  Good applicants will be self motivated, enjoy working in an office setting, look forward to doing administrative support for the dietitian, and carry themselves professionally.  Minimum committment is 6 months, one year is preferred.  Typical schedule includes 6-12 hours per month, but varies based on the clinic need and volunteer capacity.

Examples of activities volunteers do (HIPAA training required prior to starting):

  • Phone calls for scheduling and to answer prospective patient inquiries

  • Marketing

  • Scanning

  • Reviewing charts and observing patient appointments if possible/appropriate (only allowed after 3 months of volunteering completed)

Interns currently enrolled in a dietetic internship may apply/request to schedule a 2-4 week rotation with the SF Nutrition Clinic as part of their overall program.  You must be accepted into a dietetic internship before inquiring about doing a short rotation with the SFNC.  Interns are accepted on a case-by-case basis after reviewing resume, and conducting at least one phone and/or in-person interview.  The SF Nutrition Clinic does not provide a full internship program.

Examples of what interns do during optional 3-4 week rotation at the SF Nutrition Clinic:

  • Prepare and deliver a nutrition presentation in the community

  • Review and update, or create, handouts for the practice

  • Observe nutrition counseling appointments, and group classes taught by an RD--

  • Practice writing chart notes in an outpatient setting

  • Research a current, or new diet therapy in nutrition, and report on it to the RD

"Volunteering with Norae as a nutrition student was a career changing experience and set me on the path to entrepreneurialism. In my nearly there years working at San Francisco Nutrition Clinic, I learned the ins and outs and gained experience behind-the-scenes of a successful nutrition private practice. My time with Norae set the foundation for starting my own creative content nutrition business and I couldn't thank her enough for the opportunity to learn and grow"

"Being a volunteer at the SF Nutrition Clinic was an unparalleled experience. My time with Norae helped me gain a deeper understanding of the dietetic world and provided an opportunity to see private practice medical nutrition therapy in action. I believe this real world experience helped me become a competitive applicant for a dietetic internship."
